How far should I stand from a microphone?

How far should I stand from a microphone?

There is no single distance that fits every microphone and singer. Closer recording can increase bass and mouth noise; moving farther away can capture more room sound. Choose distance by testing the loudest phrase you plan to sing, not only quiet speech.

Try this workflow

  1. Start with a comfortable distance and a steady position.
  2. Record the same phrase slightly closer and farther away.
  3. Choose the take with clear words, controlled peaks and manageable room sound.

What to check before you finish

Keep distance consistent during the performance. If plosive consonants produce thumps, angle the microphone slightly or use a suitable pop filter. Reduce input gain when peaks distort rather than relying on editing afterward.

A practical example

Record three versions of the same phrase from steady positions. A very close take may have a heavy bass tone; a distant take may capture more room reflections. Choose the position that gives a useful balance and repeat it for the full song. Comparing identical phrases is clearer than comparing unrelated parts of different takes.

More questions

Can a tool fix a microphone that was too close?

EQ can reduce some excess bass, but it cannot reliably repair every plosive or a distorted recording.

Should I move closer for every quiet word?

Large distance changes can alter tone and level unexpectedly. Try consistent positioning first, then use performance control and careful input setup for dynamic passages.
