Why does my microphone recording sound too quiet?

The short answer

A quiet recording can come from low input gain, distance, the wrong microphone or a soft performance. Increasing playback volume helps listening but does not change the recorded signal. Check the capture setup before deciding to amplify the whole file.

Try this workflow

  1. Confirm the intended microphone is selected by your device.
  2. Record a closer or slightly higher-gain test without clipping.
  3. For a usable existing take, increase gain modestly in Volume & Fades.

What to check before you finish

Listen for noise after amplification. Raising the voice also raises hiss and room sound already in the file. If noise becomes dominant, improve the capture setup and record again rather than applying ever larger boosts.

A practical example

After raising the gain of a quiet take, compare a pause and a sung phrase. If the pause becomes very noisy, the problem is the recording's balance between useful signal and noise. A new closer, cleaner capture may produce a better result than another gain increase on the same already noisy file.

More questions

Should every quiet recording be normalized?

Only if the level adjustment helps. Normalization does not improve the signal-to-noise balance of the captured recording.

Can a quiet but clean recording still work well?

Yes. A sensible level adjustment can make it useful. Judge its noise and distortion after adjustment rather than rejecting it only because it starts quietly.
