How do I reduce room echo in a vocal recording?

The short answer

Room reflections become part of the microphone recording. Before using effects, improve the recording position: move away from hard reflective corners and choose a quieter, less echoing area. Soft furnishings can help, but results depend on the room and microphone.

Try this workflow

  1. Compare a short phrase in two room positions.
  2. Keep the microphone closer to the voice while avoiding plosives.
  3. Choose the position with clearer words and shorter room reflections.

What to check before you finish

A noise gate is not a de-reverb tool. It may quiet gaps but reflections during singing can remain. Adding more reverb to hide a room problem often makes the vocal less distinct. A fresh recording can be the most effective fix.

A practical example

In a room with a bare wall, compare recording toward the room's softer area rather than directly beside the reflective surface. Use the same microphone distance in both tests. Listen to word endings, where the reflection may be more obvious. Choose the clearer location before changing EQ, gain or adding effects to the voice.

More questions

Can SurStudio remove all room echo?

There is no dedicated de-reverb tool in this version. Noise Gate controls quiet passages, not reflections underneath the voice.

Will a noise gate remove the echo on sung words?

No. While the voice is above the gate threshold, its reflections can remain. The gate mainly affects quieter portions of the recording.
