How do I use Mute, Solo and Volume in the stem mixer?

The short answer

Mute removes a stem from playback. Solo lets you focus on selected parts, while Volume changes a stem's contribution to the combined sound. These controls help you inspect separation and make a backing mix without editing four files separately.

Try this workflow

  1. Start with all stems at their default volume.
  2. Solo one part to inspect it, then turn Solo off.
  3. Mute unwanted parts and make small volume adjustments before exporting.

What to check before you finish

Check the mix after every change. Raising several stems can produce an unexpectedly loud result even when each sounds acceptable alone. Export a custom mix only after confirming the intended mute and solo settings.

A practical example

To make a vocal-and-bass study version, solo those two groups and listen before exporting. Then switch back to an all-stem mix so you can compare the arrangement. Read the current controls rather than relying on what you clicked earlier; leaving a Solo active can change which parts you hear during the next test.

More questions

Do the stems play in sync?

The mixer schedules the stem parts together. Keep the matching set from one split when moving them into another audio project.

Can I boost all four stems to make a better mix?

Boosting every group mostly increases level. Start with relative balance, and check the combined output rather than assuming four louder channels mean better sound.
