How do I remix a song with four stems?

The short answer

A simple stem remix changes the balance of estimated source groups. You might lower vocals, bring the bass forward or create an instrumental version. Start by understanding the original balance before making dramatic changes, especially when the stems contain bleed.

Try this workflow

  1. Listen to the unmodified stem mix.
  2. Adjust one group's volume at a time.
  3. Export a custom mix and compare it with the original at similar loudness.

What to check before you finish

Four stems cannot provide the control of an original recording session. Other may contain several instruments that need different adjustments, and separation artifacts become more obvious after large boosts. Keep the first remix subtle.

A practical example

For an instrumental remix, mute Vocals, lower Bass a little if it dominates, and leave Other unchanged at first. Compare the verse and chorus before touching Drums. This makes it easier to hear which single change improved the balance. Keep notes of the useful settings if you will recreate the mix later.

More questions

Can I publish any remix I make?

Editing a file does not itself grant permission to publish it. Use recordings you own or have permission to adapt and share.

Can four stems fix the balance between guitar and piano?

Not when both are inside Other. Their relative balance remains combined, so changes to that group's volume affect them together.
