How do I slow down a song without lowering its pitch?
The short answer
Independent time stretching lets you reduce playback speed while keeping the pitch shift at zero. This is useful for learning a fast phrase. The result may develop artifacts at extreme slowdowns, so begin with a modest reduction and a short section.
Try this workflow
- Keep pitch shift at zero in Pitch & Speed.
- Reduce speed slightly and process a test.
- Use Audio Cutter to focus on the difficult phrase if needed.
What to check before you finish
Listen for smeared attacks or unstable sustained notes. Once the phrase is comfortable, move back toward the original speed. Slowing the whole song is not always necessary when only a few seconds require attention.
A practical example
To learn a fast instrumental phrase, trim the passage with a little lead-in, keep pitch at zero and try a speed of 0.8 times. Once the notes are clear, increase the pace gradually. If the stretched audio becomes distracting, use a smaller slowdown and alternate with the original to retain the phrase's natural feel.
More questions
Is ordinary slow playback the same thing?
Not always. Some playback methods change pitch together with speed, while time stretching aims to keep them independent.
Should I practise only with slowed audio?
No. Return to the original speed and context regularly so timing, articulation and phrasing remain connected to the real performance.
