Can I remove vocals from a mono recording?
The short answer
A mono recording has one channel and no left-right difference for center cancellation to exploit. Basic stereo removal therefore has little useful spatial information. AI can still estimate vocals from musical patterns, although a mono source may remain difficult to separate cleanly.
Try this workflow
- Choose an AI method rather than Basic stereo.
- Preview a passage with clear singing.
- Compare the instrumental against the mono original before exporting.
What to check before you finish
Making two identical copies of a mono channel does not create new stereo information. It produces dual mono. If a genuine stereo version exists, compare it, but do not assume a wider or louder file is automatically a better source.
A practical example
For an old mono live recording, use a short AI preview containing the singer and accompaniment. If duplicated channels produce a nearly empty Basic result, that reflects cancellation of shared audio rather than successful singer recognition. Go back to the original file and choose the method that retains usable musical context.
More questions
Will converting mono to stereo fix separation?
No. Adding a second identical channel does not recover the original instrument positions or recording tracks.
Can mono AI output create the original stereo soundstage?
No. A separator may produce channel outputs, but it does not recover an original stereo arrangement that was never present in the source.
