Audio formats for AI vocal remover: MP3, WAV, FLAC and more

Learn which audio formats you can try in SurStudio, how the compatibility converter works and how to separate vocals and music from your recording.

Which audio formats can I upload?

SurStudio’s audio picker accepts MP3, WAV/WAVE, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG/OGA, OPUS, AIFF/AIF/AIFC, WMA, ALAC, CAF, AMR, AC3, EAC3, AU/SND, MP2/MPGA, MKA, APE and WV/WavPack. These names describe common file containers, audio encodings or aliases. A file extension alone does not tell you everything about the codec inside the file. Use a real exported audio recording rather than renaming a file to one of these extensions.

Upload a file in Vocal Remover, Acapella Extractor or Stem Splitter. Once its waveform is ready, the same separation controls work with the decoded audio regardless of its original extension. Mini Studio and Audio Joiner also use the compatibility importer.

Fast native decoding and the compatibility converter

The website first asks your browser to decode the recording. Compatible MP3, WAV and other recordings can open without downloading the conversion engine. If decoding fails, a supported audio file is passed to the local compatibility converter, converted to WAV and decoded again. The converter downloads about 31 MB when first needed.

The converter runs on your device and does not send the recording to an audio processing server. Loading and conversion add time, particularly on mobile phones. Keep the tab open and try a short clip first. Browser memory, the codec, file corruption and encryption can still prevent a recording from opening.

Separate vocals and instrumental music

Use Fast AI and preview ten seconds from a busy part of the track. Listen for remaining lyrics, cymbal changes and distortion before running the full separation. If necessary, compare Quality AI. Basic stereo is an alternative for suitable stereo recordings, but it can remove instruments placed in the center as well as the singer.

A stereo music recording with clear lead vocals usually gives a different result from speech with music, a mono recording or a live performance. Changing the file extension does not solve overlapping sounds. Vocal removal is an estimate; the app cannot guarantee complete isolation for every recording.

Choose a source and download your results

Use your highest-quality available source. WAV, FLAC or ALAC can preserve details already present in a lossless recording. Turning an old MP3 into FLAC or WAV does not restore information removed during compression. A clean MP3 can still be a useful starting point for karaoke and practice.

Separated vocals and instrumental results download as WAV. For editing, choose the available WAV bit depth and keep a copy of the source. You can also send an output to Mini Studio. The nine-format full soundtrack converter is a separate download workflow; it does not make every separated output available in nine formats.

Files that are not an audio upload

MIDI describes musical notes and does not contain a finished vocal recording. An Ableton or other DAW project needs to be exported as audio first. Streaming links and encrypted subscription downloads are not supported local audio recordings. Raw PCM also needs correct sample rate, channel and encoding information, so export it into a WAV container.

Individual uploads are limited to 250 MB and 30 minutes, with additional decoded-memory checks. A phone may need a smaller file. If a recording fails, export an unprotected WAV or MP3 from a trusted editor and retry. Do not repeatedly rename its extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload WMA or AIFF for vocal removal?

Yes, you can select WMA, AIFF and their supported aliases. If native browser decoding fails, the local converter attempts WAV conversion before separation. Codec and memory restrictions still apply.

Does SurStudio guarantee every audio format will open?

No. It supports a broad list of common audio formats and tries a compatibility converter. Encryption, unsupported codecs, damaged files and device limits can still block a file.

Can I separate vocals from a FLAC or ALAC recording?

Yes, when the recording can be decoded. After importing, use the same vocal and instrumental separation controls as for MP3 or WAV.

Can I upload MIDI or a DAW project to remove vocals?

No. Export a mixed audio file from the project first. MIDI contains note instructions rather than recorded vocals.
